Luckily for me, my uncle was a well-established Colombian emerald dealer, and spent 30 years going back and forth between Colombia’s most famous mines and the United States. I grew up around these precious stones and fell entirely in love with them over the years. My uncle told me of a story he heard from one of the miners that the reason people love gemstones so much is that they remind us of the first thing we see when we’re brought into this earth: that twinkle in our mother’s eye. Whether or not this is true, there is no doubt that these natural wonders evoke powerful feelings and emotions within us.
